Located in the 1,239,840 acre Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, the Selway has its beginnings near the Idaho-Montana border. This early listed "wild and scenic" river offers some of the greatest whitewater adventure on the continent. Our float covers 47 miles on the main Selway where the rapids are fierce and frequent. We traverse the Bitterroot and Nez Perce National Forests. Nez Perce Indians trod in the same area we visit. Our first trainee trip allowed us to host Sir Edmund Hillary and friends!
Meet at Missoula, Montana the evening before our launch date. You may wish to inquire about ranches around Hamilton. Early bus departure in the morning takes us over the historic Nez Perce pass, then down the upper Selway. You may see a hawk winging near the great divide during the drive to Paradise Camp launch site! After lunch, we spend the next five days threading through class 4-5 rapids including Washerwoman, Galloping Gertie, Ping Pong, Goat Creek, Ham, Grizzly Saddle, Double Drop, Ladle, and Wolf Creek! Wildflowers include fragile Elephant's head, Clarkia, and Bear Grass. Trout fishing, side stream hiking, and horseshoes are among camp activities. Elwood's beach, our last camp, has a majestic Western Red Cedar you'll never forget.
Due to campsite shortage and terrain, only one small group of 16 may launch per day during the main float season. We should have the riffles, mountain lions, goats, bears, deer, moose, and elk viewing to ourselves. Like the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, hosted also by us, the Selway is a catch and release native Cutthroat Trout fishery. Our trip ends upstream from Selway Falls with the sighting of a road and our chartered bus. We eat a catered lunch and proceed to Missoula over the historic Lolo Pass of Lewis and Clark expedition fame. Your logistical changes are possible, but we recommend staying the night in Missoula.
My family was the first Idaho outfitter to be granted a permit on this magnificent river. Maps were not available, rapids were not named; guides were "self-bailers!" Travel, whether hiking or rafting, is still at a minimum use.
This pristine experience and your solitude allow this trip to be the ultimate in Whitewater AdventuresTM. OUR MEALS ARE SUMPTUOUS! We'll alter any menu item for you.
